Description
Offered for sale is an original souvenir program for the opening production of the Community Theatre of Catskill, New York which happened to be presumably the first musical comedy production presented and staged by Busby Berkeley for three performances on July 5 and 6, 1920. The program is for
The Quaker Girl
, a well-known musical that first played on Broadway in 1911 that had a very large contingent of dancers giving Busby the opportunity to do his magic. As can be seen in the Cast list, Busby and his mother Gertrude both played key parts in addition to his direction. The program is about 6 by 9 inches. has paper covers, and is 32 pages in length, most of which are ads that were paid for by local companies. It is in good condition as it is lightly water stained and the front cover is creased in the lower right corner.
The program comes from the estate of actress Dorothy Tierney, who played the lead, Prudence, the Quaker girl. Tierney was then an up and coming Broadway actress who, like many on Broadway, worked in Summer theater while Broadway was shut down. She married actor Robert Keith in 1930 after they met on Broadway.
